Stock, semi-custom or custom
Stock cabinetry comes in fixed sizes and fills the gaps with filler strips. Semi-custom lets you adjust sizes and finishes within a manufacturer’s system, which covers most kitchens well. Custom is built to your room, and is the right answer when the space is genuinely awkward, when ceilings are high enough that standard uppers leave a dead band, or when you want something a catalogue does not make.
What matters for kitchen cabinets in this climate
Box construction matters more here than in a dry state. Plywood boxes tolerate Central Florida humidity better than particleboard, particularly in a house that sits unconditioned for part of the year, and the difference shows at the sink base first. Doors and drawer fronts are largely aesthetic; the box is the part you are actually buying.
Layout before finish
Where the kitchen cabinets go is a bigger decision than what they look like. Drawer banks instead of lower doors, a pull-out beside the range, and getting the dishwasher on the correct side of the sink are the changes people notice daily. We work that out on the walk-through, in the room, with the current kitchen still there to argue with.
If the boxes are sound and the layout works, refacing is worth pricing against replacement before you decide.
