It is opening protection
A garage door is the largest single opening in most homes and, if it fails in a storm, the pressure that enters the garage can lift the roof. Wind-rated doors are a code requirement for new installation in much of Florida, and rating the door without rating the track and jamb anchoring achieves nothing. Retrofit bracing exists for an otherwise sound door.
Insulation
An uninsulated door on a west-facing garage turns that space into an oven and pushes heat into the rooms beside it. An insulated door is worth it if the garage is used for anything, and essential if it is becoming living space.
What garage door replacement has to satisfy
A wind rating that covers the door, the track and the jamb anchoring as one assembly, because rating the panel alone achieves nothing. New installations across most of Florida have to meet that under the Florida Building Code, and retrofit bracing exists for an otherwise sound door. Insulation is the other half: an uninsulated door on a west elevation heats the rooms beside it all afternoon.
Appearance
Because it dominates the elevation, the door does more for curb appeal than almost anything else at the price. See curb appeal remodels.
